The brain is the control center of the human body. It manages thoughts, memory, movement, emotions, and vital functions like breathing and heartbeat. Although it weighs only about 1.3–1.4 kilograms, it contains billions of nerve cells and processes enormous amounts of information every second. The brain works by sending and receiving electrical and chemical signals through a vast communication network.

The brain is made of neurons (nerve cells) that communicate with each other.

How communication happens:

  • Neurons send electrical impulses

  • Signals travel along nerve fibers

  • Chemicals called neurotransmitters carry messages between cells

  • Billions of signals move every second

This system allows fast responses to thoughts, senses, and actions.

The brain has several major regions, each with specific roles.

🧠 Cerebrum

The largest part of the brain.

Connects the brain to the spinal cord.

Controls automatic functions:

The brain receives information from the senses through nerves.

Examples:

  • Eyes → visual cortex (sight)

  • Ears → auditory cortex (sound)

  • Skin → sensory cortex (touch)

  • Nose → smell centers

  • Tongue → taste centers

The brain interprets these signals to create your experience of the world.


💭 Memory and Learning

Memory happens through changes in neural connections.

  • Repeated activity strengthens neuron pathways

  • The brain forms networks for stored information

  • Sleep helps consolidate memory

Learning physically reshapes brain connections — this is called neuroplasticity.

Emotions are controlled by a group of structures called the limbic system.
